3,500+ teens. Two researchers.
One book that will change how you think.

It’s been an honor to hear from adults who describe
Behind Their Screens as “revelatory” and “the perfect vehicle to ensure productive conversations.”

Since the book was published, folks have shared a steady stream of messages about how it transformed their thinking. Community reading groups have said it provided common ground for new, realistic, and rich conversations. Parents see their teens’ lives through clearer lenses, and with fresh ideas about how to help.

We love to hear it.

“This book felt refreshingly in touch with the teenagers of today,” Oliver Mulvihill (age 16) wrote, before recommending it to “anyone who wants to know more about how the modern digital age is affecting young people.”

The aim of this book was to unpack some of what’s hardest about growing up with today’s technologies. Teens' reactions have given us the sense that we did justice to their stories. But perhaps our favorite praise came from teens like the 16-year-old who reviewed Behind Their Screens for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Behind Their Screens is also available as an audiobook.

Emily is the narrator (photo at left from Blackstone’s NYC recording studio). The Breathe Right strip on her nose is supposedly for voice clarity, but may have just been a prank played on Emily by the production team.

The audio team was most taken by the sexting chapter and the pressures teens described around nudes.

The authors especially appreciate these press pieces about:

This book is an antidote to the restless, never-ending anxieties we face as we contemplate what often feel like binary options for kids growing up in our networked world. Thank you for this book which has proven to be the catalyst for many informed, curious, and productive conversations for our students, our families, and our educators.
